Tell us about you!
I’ve always loved fashion - and magazines in particular. While studying photography at NYU, I interned in the fashion closets at Vogue and Modern Bride. After I graduated, I started my first job as the Art Assistant at Lucky Magazine. All of those jobs played a huge role in my love for organization and clothes. Working in publishing was an eye-opening experience because I got to see and touch a huge selection of garments - from the inexpensive all the way up to Alexander McQueen couture. It gave me a new appreciation for getting dressed every day and made me want to improve my own style. This wound up being a major source of inspiration for the app when I came up with the idea. I liked seeing all of the clothes cataloged for the magazine’s records and thought, “Wow, this would be so useful if it was digitized!"
Why did you decide to start Stylebook? How did you get the idea?
I’m now married to my co-founder Bill, but at the time Stylebook started, we were dating and the app was just one of our goofy weekend projects. We didn’t think anyone would buy it or would even get the concept. He is a computer programmer and wanted to create an app for the brand-new App Store. It was very unusual that Apple basically opened the store up to anyone who was willing to create and publish software. He had the idea to make a personal finance app, but I wanted to create a closet management app. I was inspired by my time interning in fashion closets.
Who is your target market?
Anyone who wants to develop their personal style and save money on clothes. The app’s main goal is help you get more use out the clothes you own and help you remember the great outfits you already have. Every once in a while, I feel like I hate all my clothes, but then I browse my outfits in the app and I’m reminded of a fantastic outfit I wore a few weeks ago.
How long you’ve been in business?
We’ve been in business since 2009, so we’re approaching 10 years! I’m so grateful to all of our customers for allowing us to have such a fun and unusual job.
What’s the future for Stylebook?
We have dozens of ideas for new features that are either being worked on or are waiting for development. We are very serious about quality control and take our time creating anything new since we want it to work well. Plus, as the app grows it gets trickier to squeeze in new stuff without the interface becoming very confusing.
What are some of the best use cases for the app or stories from your users?
There are tons of different reasons customers use Stylebook so it’s difficult to pinpoint the best use case, but my favorite use case for Stylebook is using the app to remember what you wore in the past.
Once a customer told me Stylebook has become a sort of diary for them and I love that idea. It reminds me of the fantastic book “Worn Stories” by Emily Spivack that has essays by people recounting the memories attached to certain clothes. Some customers have been using the app for years and they’ve tracked their wardrobe almost every single day.
